Crystalline silica is a mineral found in materials such as sand, stone, concrete, and mortar. Exposure to small particles of the substance can cause serious long term health issues, including silcosis, lung cancer, kidney disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To better protect workers, OSHA has issued two new respirable crystalline silica standards: one for construction and the other for general industry and maritime.
